Young Gifted and Black

Young Gifted and Black

As a child, photographer Gordon Parks was a big influence because his photographs allowed me to see a picture without a camera. But it wasn’t until after serving my country in the United States Army that I would become a young black female self-taught photographer and herstorian to capture on film the culture in the music industry called Hip Hop. This gave me the opportunity and experience to write my history on film with those magical moments during a time when rap was only considered underground music.

In 1991 my twin sissy Gramma Funk "The Funk Hostess Wit Da Mostess" and I started promoting Hip-Hop in a big way with the Infamous Tuesday Night "Funk Hut" Parties for signed and unsigned artists where they had a stage to display their talents. This is also where my career as a self-taught photographer began by capturing Artists and Celebrities who were in support of Us and the Hip-Hop Culture Movement.

So I have invited you all to take a journey back down memory lane with me to when we were Young, Happy to Be Nappy, Hungry for our Craft, Determine to make a name for ourselves before paparazzi would even aim their cameras in Hip Hop’s direction.

I am so proud of how we all represented the Hip-Hop Culture to the Fullest. It was such a Beautiful journey and now with thirty years of experience under my belt, I look forward to what the future holds for me as a Herstorian (History captured by Her) Celebrity Hip-Hop photographer along with my extended archive of memorable photographs to share with You and the World that will forever be etched in history.
